AutoCAD 2010/2011/2012 DWG Format

Hi. Recently one of my client have upgraded from AutoCAD 2007 to 2010. However, his AutoCAD 2010 crashes when he open any version 2007 3D drawing file. This happens to all his version 2007 3D drawing files. He has installed autocad2010_update_1 and Object Enabler but the problem still occurs. Attached is one of the v2007 3D .dwg files. Please help as he has a lot of old 3D drawings in version 2007.

If you are having problems with 3D files, try setting the 3DCONVERSIONMODE
variable to 0, prior to opening the drawing. There have been reports of
problems with the conversion of 3D before.

This sounds very similar to the problems I have been having opening older
version files with proxy objects in them.

I have tried your suggestion. However, it do not seem to work with my drawings. My OS still stopped working while opening the file. May i have your email so i could email the file to you and try open it?

One of the things to remember is that once the file has been opened and
converted, there is no going back. you have to change your settings and
open "virgin" files that have not been previously opened.

I am having similar issues using AutoCAD 2010, and I am not even trying to open earlier version Civil 3D files, just earlier version AutoCAD files possibly corrupt, possiblty with just some bad elements. I can open some of them, and some of them I cannot. I tried 3Dconversionmode=0 in the command line and still cannot open them. The files I am trying to open have never been opened with AutoCAD 2010 before, because I just got the program installed a couple of weeks ago on my machine.

In order to open the files, our administrator is installing AutoCAD 2006 on my machine. It seems that some purging and auditing, using 2006, will allow me to purge out and audit some of the entities that are causing the problem. This has worked on some of the older version files, but not all of them. It seems that there is some specific kind of entity in the previous versions that AutoCAD 2010 does not like at all.

AutoCAD 2010 products definitly have issues with opening older drawings. My company has 1000's of drawings in AutoCAD Mechgancial 2007 and we are seeing multiple issues.

I had a drawing yesterday from one of the drafters which kept crashing as he would try to do certain things. When I ran recover on the original drawing created in 2007 AutoCAD found 1400 errors, recover would fix them but once done AutoCAD 2010 would crash, that was very useless.

My fix: I opened the drawing first with AutoCAD 2010, ran purge all 3 times to clean the file. I saved and exited the drawing then ran recover again all was resolved. Did it fix the file 100% who knows I guess we will find out sooner or later.
