    DWG File Importing Help

    Hello,
I am importing wood moulding DWG files into 3DS Max and some of the files are not importing correctly. I have attached a sample of one not working for me. The wood at the top should have a carved look to it, but instead what should be carved is just flat lines when I try to import it into 3ds Max.

I was hoping someone could tell me if there was something wrong with the file. Or maybe has an insight into how to get it to work in 3ds Max. I have asked for help over at the 3DS Max forum but they must be very busy on projects over there.

Thank you so much in advance for any help.

    Hi,

how did you try to get the geometry from the DWG to 3DS-Max? There are so much ways, so what did you try?

    • Load DWG into AutoCAD, export as FBX and load the FBX-file into 3DS
    • Convert the DWG to FBX via the FBX converter
    • Import the DWG into 3DS (how did you set the import-options, especially welding, smoothing and deviation)
    • Reference the DWG into 3DS (same questions to the options)

BTW: I would use a image-mapping instead of constructing the fine linework on the solid.

    Hello Alfed,

Thank you so much for your response. I imported the DWG into 3DS Max.  I played with the import options going higher and lower on welding, smoothing and deviation. It didn't seem to matter, the profiles with finely cut lines didn't come out as they should. I have to use these mouldings in many different angles, so image mapping the carved section won't work.

It looks like you got the same flat face as I did where it should be all carved and have many levels.

Thank you for trying, I really appreciate it.  :smileyhappy:

    Hi,

    >> It looks like you got the same flat face

Where? Could you mark the area you mean and upload this?

    >> the profiles with finely cut lines didn't come out as they should

Just on the rendered picture or do you see that as "wrong geometry after import"?

    Hi,

I've attached a simular moulding profile to show you where the problem is. Those fine lines you see should have a carved depth to them as in the picture attached. It is the wrong geometry after import.

    Hi,

    >> It is the wrong geometry after import

Sorry NO, it's the geometry in the DWG that does not have such details. That's what I see in the DWG (so I have not imported anything, just opened your DWG file):

A lot of "curves" are segmented as straight lines, so my feeling is that the DWG is converted from any software that did this segmentation, it's not the importer to 3DS.

    Sorry, - alfred -

Thank you for affirning what is wrong with the DWG file. I know it won't be the last one like this I will be given, but at least I now know what is wrong.

    Much apprciated .:smileyhappy:
