I'm a homeowner trying to find out how my architect could transfer the floor plans, elevations, etc... he created in autoCAD 2008 to a newer version to create 3D images with the existing information.
He told us that his office has newer versions but he created our project in 2008 autoCAD and it would take him 2 days to add the points necessary for creating 3D pages of the house. But, he said, if he had done it in a new version it would be easier.
You may have mis-understood what he said, because the newest versions of AutoCAD will open previous versions seamlessly, I'm not aware of any differences between 2D drawings created in AutoCAD2011 and those created in 2008 that would make building a 3D model from 2D plans any faster.
Perhaps it's not about newer versions of the AutoCAD, but rather a comparison between AutoCAD and a different Autodesk product, such as Revit. Either way, if you need a 3D model and he can do it in only 2 days, I think you're getting a bargain.
Not to take work away from your Architect but if this task is not truly critical to your project you yourself could create the 3D views in a slightly more simplistic form using the free site http://www.homestyler.com/
