.dwg open default

I have read several thread regarding this issue, but none that matched my situation. We have a classroom of computers running AutoCAD 2008 that do not have AutoCAD set as the default for opening .DWG files. The default is set in the original profile that I used to install the software, but this did not copy over. Each new user that logs in has to reset it and it does not keep it. If they open AutoCAD and then open the file it works fine. Is there a way to make this take effect for all users? I realize that this software is not really meant of a multi-user environment, but I have got to get this working correctly. TIA for any help!

cant you set windows to open all .dwg files with a program you selected?
windows explorer > tool > folder options

I have done that. The problem is that it doesn't hold it. I can change it for the current user, but when another user logs in, it is reset for them. I made the change in the default profile, but it still does not carry over.

Have you made the change for each user profile that logs in?

I'm pretty sure it's a "by user" setting and not a global system setting.

No, I haven't made the change to each user. We are in a classroom setting with hundreds of users so that would be impossible. What I'm asking is if there is a way to set this within one of the Autodesk products or if this is a windows issue. Most file associations can be set in the default windows profile and then will carry over to each user as they log on, this one however, does not do that.

as far as i know what youre asking for has nothing to do with autocad, what
you are attempting to do is a windows things.
however i have never heard of each users settings being reset when doing
that.
usually when you set an application to open a specific file type its the
whole machine, not a specific user.

Is the institution using a script at boot up to load a default or user specific registry. All of the file associations are stored in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT section of the registry and should remain constant unless there is a .reg file being loaded at boot to overwrite or update the registry settings either to default or to user specific. Roaming profiles perhaps.
