Field Excel Data Links

I have set up a table where an a column "Area Total (SF)" is linked into the drawing as a field. The table is also linked to an excel file which includes formulas that need to use the field data. How do I have the table write to the excel file with the updated field and read the cells which use the formulas in the excel file?

you can't.......there has been a bug with the write data links to external source command......which has been there since at least 2008 and is still there in 2010.

when you right click on your updated table in your DWG and right click you should be able to select write data links to external source and this should write the new values out to your existing excel file, but the chances are you will get this error message

Command:
1 object(s) found.
1 data link(s) do not allow their data to be written out.
0 data link(s) written out successfully.

Autodesk Support says "check Allow writing to source file"

But it never helps, this feature is active by default in data linking dialog window.

So according to  BernardMadoff  "there has been a bug with the write data links to external source command......which has been there since at least 2008 and is still there in 2010"

-  and is still there in 2011:

Command: _DATALINKUPDATE
Select an option [Update data link/Write data link] <Update data link>: _W
Select objects: 1 found
1 data link(s) do not allow their data to be written out.
0 data link(s) written out successfully.

Finally, in 2012 version I've succeeded to "upload to the source" (kinda quote from the matrix :].

I guess it has something to do with newer MS office version of 2007, although I've never found any restrictions considering data linking with MS 2003.

One problem remains data link editing is still not active with right clicking the table:

so you have to open all data links, right click the one you need and check allow writing to source in expanded settings window.:

I am trying to "Write data links to external source" on AutoCAD LT 2011 to Excel 2010 and still receive the following error.

1 object(s) found.
1 data link(s) could not be written out.
0 data link(s) written out successfully.

The ability to update the linked excel file after changes made in AutoCAD will definitely make my life so much easier at work!  Somebody please help!!

I am using Autocad 2013 and still having this problem, I have to edit Data Extraction Settings and run through the few screens and export to file again in order to update the excel file. data.jpg

Try NanoCAD (DWG native, and english also available). It has build in sheet editor and update of tables in real time without any linking, updating, referencing ... endiing up with auto'glitches.

Greetings all, seems like this this thread has been dead for a bit. But I'm just getting into linking excell tables (2007) to Autocad (2012 Civil 3D) using data links. I've tried a couple different methods both using paste special and setting up a data link and then inserting a table associated with the data link. Does anyone know if the mentioned "bug" regarding exporting data to the linked excell file has been corrected yet and if it potentially has anythign to do with excell? I don't have any issues updating the data from excell to AutoCAD, but I'm getting mixed results going the other way. I can sometimes get it to export the data from AutoCAD to the excell spreadsheet, but it creats a new .XLSX file in "my documents" instead of updating the original excell file at the correct file location. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Assuming this tool works and I'm just setting it up wrong, question #2. Is there a way to set the default for the datalink to have "allow writing to source file" checked when using the "paste special" method? This is a much faster way to get the link into excell, but currently it comes accross with that checkbox un checked.

Thanks for your time.

Thread is dead, problem is alive. And nothing has changed since the first post. I could solve the back and forth interation only once, between MS2010 and AutoCAD 2012. But on the other machine same things with same settings didn't work. Now it doesn't work with 2013.

Try reading once again this http://docs.autodesk.com/ACD/2011/ENU/filesACR/WS1a9193826455f5ffa23ce210c875431154bf0.htm

maybe you'll find out something between the lines... share if you do... :smileyhappy:
