Advanced Rendering - Memory Limit & Physical Scale

Could someone please explain what these two options really do under advanced rendering settings?

1. Memory Limit

Determines the memory limit for rendering. The renderer keeps a count of the memory it uses at render time. If the memory limit is reached, the geometry for some objects is discarded in order to allocate memory for other objects.

2. Physical Scale

Specifies the physical scale. Default = 1500.

I am trying to render a huge drawing on my computer and often have problems with memory. I have XP 64 bit with 12gb of RAM and a quad processor and Quadro FX 1700 with autocad 64 bit... eveyrhitng seems right but once memory gets to around 3g my system tells me memory is low.

I know more processors would be good. but i know thats not the issue.
