What would cause the Properties command and the Quick Select command to stop recognizing drawing entities?
If I select some objects and hit properties it tells me no selection. Same in Qselect.
Ther is a variable that will shut off dialog boxes but I don't remembeer it.

"FILEDIA" should be set to 1 for dialogs, hope that helps

FILEDIA only controls the dialog box for finding & opening files.
There is another variable that turns off dialog boxes for other commands, INSERT for example.

I had exactly the same problem.
Go to Control Panel
Select Uninstall a Program
Select AutoCad 2008
It will offer a button to Uninstall/Change. Click it.
Select Repair or Reinstall
Select Repair my AutoCad 2008 installation and click next.
That's it. You don't even need the install disk.
Brilliant
