Text auto-rotat e problem

Hi,
I am having a problem with inserting/editing text in simple 2D cad drawings :
When I click on MTEXT, my cursor changes to the usual text box insertion icon, but the text appears vertical (as if rotated 90º). And entering text (no matter how big or small the MTEXT box is) the text also appears vertical.
When I try to edit text from older drawings (done prior to having this problem), the same problem occurs : The text changes orientation and goes vertical.
I have to manually rotate the text back to the horizontal position every time, and it is annoying.
This is a problem that started occuring in the past week (no changes that I know of were made to autocad settings).
Help please!

Never use the @Arial... Use the Arial instead.

... Unless you specifically *want* your text rotated 270 degrees that is. And sometimes you just might.
All of the "@" fonts will do this btw. Not just @Arial.

begs the question....what are the @something fonts? I _only_ see them in Acad, never observed them in any other application. and they seem to proliferate...
