I'm trying to simplify my elevation poches to vertical stripes 2' across. Would you use ARRAY or HATCH? Since there are no vertical hatch patterns in my library, how does one create a .pat file?
Thanks in advance!

Array or copy is easier to control the position of the lines.
Find ACAD.PAT in your PC, open it with wordpad or alike program, make your own hatch style in there.

The standard autocad hatches (horizontal) can be used as vertical hatches. Alter the angle in the hatch options so the hatch is rotated 90 degrees.
