Lost all menu control in Acad 2008

Since my last session on Acad 2008, I have mysteriously lost ALL the drop down menus and right-click menus. I am loading files created in the same program on the same machine, and they load as normal, but the top of the screen is now empty of toolbars or menus - as if CLEANSCREENON has been activated, but it has not.
I did nothing to the setttings - the menus were simply there one day, gone the next. I don't have great knowledge of the command lines except for my most frequently used functions, so I don't know what to do to fix this - I no longer have any control over my drawings, and I am in a panic now.
Does anyone know what could be happening, and how to fix?
Thanks
>> Update: since I posted this question, something else has changed: now the top bar where I should see all the drop down menus has only one button "Express" - again, I did nothing to cause this...WTF??

Hi,
start command _MENULOAD and let us know (upload a screenshot) what you see as loaded menus.
On top there should be placed "ACAD" (if you have plane AutoCAD and not a vertical product based on AutoCAD).
If it's not ACAD on the topmost position then start command _MENU and search your ACAD.CUI within your support-directory.
Be careful if you have done any customizations, they may get lost if you load another menu now.
