When I double click to edit a block, the rest of my drawing disappears. Is there an on/off button for that? I previous AutoCAD apps, the existing geometry was still there but kind of grayed out. PLEASE HELP.

Try REFEDIT instead of BEDIT

Thank you sooooo much. I've been trying to figure that out for about a week now! Very helpful!

I know your question was answered, but to expand on it, the BEDIT is the "Block Editor" in which by entering that it treats your block like a drawing all to itself.
REFEDIT is a Reference Editor, which allows you to modify it "in-place" with the background still visible (and as the other poster mentioned you can tweak the fading factor). Be careful in this, because if you accidentally grab background stuff, it CAN be modified simultaneously.

You can also select the block and right click -
instead of Open in Block Editor (BEDIT which is the default on double click
now), select Edit Block In Place (REFEDIT). You could change your default
double click action to that in the cui if you do it often.
