Turn off Win7's Aero Theme, and change AutoCAD's HArdware acceleration settings and see if that helps.
Since you mention these only happen at random times (hard to find a perfect fix), could it be happening only is specific files?
Also, what is different from the one machine and the other? Drill down deep if you can.
Note that AutoCAD 2009 is not supported or designed to be used in Win7, nd it's an 'expired' version so there are really no actual/true fixes just a lot fo workarounds.

Hi,
>> but his autocad keeps crashing or freezing up at random times,
In that case it would be great to see the exception-message that AutoCAD shows while/after the crash.
If there a specific drawings (as pendean mentioned) or it were specific commands .... every info "when", "with what drawing", using "what function/command" may be a help to isolate the problem.

This message remembers me to the problems around annotation-scales not cleaned up. Try to use _-SCALELISTEDIT and clean the scales you are not using in that drawing or use option RESET to come back to a limited number of annotation-scales.
BTW: what happens if another Windows user-account is used to run AutoCAD on that workstation?

unfortunitly its not a specific task or action that causes the problem, it just locks up for up to 10min or until the program is terminated.
ill pass on your suggestion about the scale command and see what happens.
also this user is the first in and last to leave everyday so no one has ever tried to run Autocad on his computer but him
