Shortcuts not working

My shortcuts are no longer working (for example, "E" for erase or "L" for line). How can these be restored.?

What recently changed or happened to your PC?

The only thing I can think of is, I un-installed a trial version of Autocad 2012.

Try a System Restore back to the uninstall of the 2012 if you can.

See if you ripped something out that should not have been.

I've had that happen when I got too aggressive with an uninstall.

I don't have a suitable system restore point to go back to.

Repair/reinstall the AutoCAd version you have and want to keep: answer 'yes' to replace all files (after you backup anything you modified).

I did a repair install and that didn't make any difference. Trying a re-install nowl but I can't complete it because I don't have the install CD.

My command line for starting the program is "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2008\acad.exe". Could this be an issue (i.e. do I need more than just the acad.exe command)?

At the commandline, type the following exactly as shown:
(findfile "acad.pgp")
What does AutoCAD return? If nothing, search your entire system for ACAD.PGP file in Windows Explorer (make sure search digs into hidden folders).

It shows "....\Application Data\\Autodesk\\AutoCAD
2008\\R17.1\\enu\\support\\acad.pgp"

Great: open that PGP, that's where your shortcuts are stored. Ensure what you want is there, save the file. Close and restart AutoCAD.

Got it, thanks. I needed to add that path to the "Support files path" in Tools - Options.

Ah, the item that was removed when you ininstalled th 2012. Sneaky little path wasn't it?

Anything else in the Support Folder that is missing?

You should see a path to Fonts, Help, A Program Files Support Folder as well as the User Support Folder, and others that you may deem critical.
