Will some of you please help me with this problem.
I just bought a new wide screen monitor for my computer and it has a fixed screen aspect ratio at 16:9 and you can't change it either through the monitor settings or with my Windows XP Home Edition settings. When I draw a square with my AutoCAD 2004, I want to see a square and not a rectangle... see what I mean...?!
What would be the consensus of opinions among AutoCAD users about modern day computer monitors...?
There must be a solution to this out there somewhere... please...

You are not running the resolution at the screen's default: do that, and your squares will look like squares. From your description, you decided to run it at a "larger" setting to see text or larger icons perhaps and that's the price you pay. unless your video card is choking and is not able to hit the screen's designed resolution of course, then you know that fix is not cheap.
There is no other way to do it, it's how screens are designed these days: their way, or you put up with the display quirks.
That's too low, the AutoCAD minimum too, and not a "wide screen" resolution: unless you bought one heck of a dirt cheap widescreen. It needs to be back up where the monitor is designed to operate: 1920X1080 or 1600x1200 is where most widescreens are these days.
I came across this posting while I was researching a problem for a land surveyor using CarlsonSurvey 2013. HIs system is a Dell T3400 with dual ATI FireGL 3600 graphics cards, WinXP SP3. He was using a standard 4:3 19" monitor with no complaints. He then bought a Viewsonic (not sure of model) 24" widscreen monitor and his drawings are stretched and skewed all over the place. He wants dual monitors for productivity. I doubt he installed the drivers that came with the monitor or changed any settings in windows so the monitor is defaulting to the current Windows settting. If I understand what you and other users are saying there are basically 2 options. He can set the monitor to its native resolution resulting in smaller text and icons on the drawing or he can try to find 2 standard (4:3) monitors in order not the have to deal with the higher resolution. I did some some searches for 4:3 monitors and I am not able to find anything larger than about 19".
Before I can advise him on options I want to be sure I know whats possible and what isn't. Do you have any other advise or options?
You may or may not be familar with Carlson (he is using the autocad version) but can you tell me if there are settings within autocad that I need to be aware of?

Assuming the 19's were 1200x1024 resolution, the screen height would have been 11.4 inches. Assuming the 24" is 1920x1080 (most popular for this size), the screen height is 11.8" so in terms of text/icon size, it's a wash for the two monitors. (see below) If however he just installed the monitor and the video card output remained the same, distortion would be significant. His ATI's will push all the way to 2560 x 1600, so all he should need to do is right click on the desktop and change the resolution to the advertised resolution of the 24" monitor, (and maybe reset the monitor back to default settings) Also, be sure to use either the DVI or Display port connection, which are both digital, not an adapter and a 9-pin D-Sub (VGA) analog cable.
