Autocad freezes once in a while.

My AutoCAD will freeze up on occasion. I will close out of a dwg, then try to open a different existing dwg and it won't open. I have to reboot and when I do the computer tells me that "WSCommCntrl.exe" is running. Is this the reason why it freezes and what is that program?

Most likely. Right-click on the satellite looking symbols
lower-left corner of your AutoCAD program window, and shut
it down (or explore it).

I have had similar problems with this pesky little program. Here's what I
did to get rid of it:

Browse to the following directories and MOVE (not copy) the following files
to a new folder (call it comm center) for backup (I put mine in my personal
folder on the network). Reverse the procedure to reinstall the
Communications Center Service.

--------------------------------------------

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application
Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2004\R16.0\enu\WebServices:

WSCommCntrData.xml
--------------------------------------------

C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2004:

WSCommCntrAcCon.arx
WSCommCntrAcConRes.dll
WSCommCntrUI1.dll
WSCommCntrUI1Res.dll
--------------------------------------------

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared

WSCommCntr1.exe

I had previously just disabled it, but for some reason that didn't seem to
work. Getting rid of all the files has seemed to work with no other ill
effects. YMMV. If anyone can advise of adverse effects this process would
cause, I'm all ears.

Not sure that trinarules20's reply above is very helpful (or literate). . .
We've got a problem with all CAD stations freezing simultaneously for a couple of seconds every few minutes (posted on a different thread). Not sure that it's the same problem, but I'll try the WSComm disable steps posted by Birdy anyway, as the whole thing smacks of some automatic internet access process, and WSComm is the biggest suspect.

Well, we're nearly a year on and no luck fixing this problem. The previous fix didn't help.
The problem went away of its own accord for several months, then reappeared in January. It seems to happen when one user saves a large file to the server. While this is saving, all other instances of ACAD freeze simultaneously. Users running other software (e.g. MS Office applications) are unaffected (otherwise I'd have a riot on my hands!).
The problem does not seem to occur when a file is saved locally. This leads me to suspect that it's something to do with the way we use ACAD - maybe some file refresh setting that is involved with Xrefs? Maybe complicated by having McAfee on the server? Although we also have McAfee on all the client PCs too. . .

Our CAD supplier is looking into this, but the only feedback I've had so far is a report that they're trying to get some response from Autodesk.

Network connection from client to server as well as your antivirus program
seems to be the culprit.
You can troubleshoot by turning off mcafee on the workstations first.
If the problem reoccurs, turn off mcafee on the server.
Another simple thing to do may be to replace the network card if it's
specific to a computer.
If you're using a switch, the problem could be there as well.

Option #1) Tell the locally installed MacAfee to ignore .dwg files. Leave
the server copy alone. Test.

Option #2)Tell the server copy of MacAfee to ignore dwg files. Leave locally
installed MacAfee at full scan. Test.

My guess is option #2 may be the solution.

We have experienced the same problem and it is a problem that we didnt use to have a year ago.  Everyones autocad "hangs" for a random amount of time at what seems like random intervals.  Some days it is more than others.  Only Autocad hangs and the computer is NOT frozen.  We have about 8 cad machines.   I am ussing a Buffalo 2TB NAS for our storage, which I though might be the culprit, as far as handling all the traffic.  But I have to rule that out because nothing else freezes except ACad.  I disabled SheetSet Manager autoupdates which "seemed" to help but the problem still exists.  I will try the AV extension filter mentioned above.

Did you ever resolve the original problem in this post?

Johnpierpoint, Did you ever find out what the problem was with this?  I posted details on the same experience.
