Getting this problem with 2008, 2007 on network running on Windows. ie. This problem still exists.
AutoCAD is renaming the DWG to atmpxxxx. This seems to be occurring when the BAK file is locked - you can simulate it by changing the properties of the BAK file to read-only and then trying to save the DWG. This simulation works on local files too.
I have submitted a support ticket and, as per usual, AutoDesk have no solution. I will post here if they ever come up with something.

I don't know if this is related or not, we are using MEP 2008. A user created a file, saved it, file saved but empty contents. This has happened a few times.
Or file saves, seems normal then all changes disappear.

We have just come across this problem renaming the .sav file we have narrowed it down to one machine, but why is this happening?? may it be a hardware or driver issue with the cpu in question because it has bsod'd a couple of times

My desktop has worked well for 3 years with AutoCAD 2008 but 2 weeks ago, it started to lock up when I clicked "SAVE AS". I lost several hours of work as the autosave file requires a "save as" to reconstitute the backup file and save the file with a new name.
Sometimes I can add some drawing to a file, click the "SAVE" icon and AutoCad locks up. If I wait long enough rather than switch off, AutoCAD allows me to delete the file where I see an underlying message: "This program is not responding".
I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice and the problem remains. Once I uninstalled I lost the backup files. I'm now utilizing my laptop until I can get this resolved

This problem still exists in AutoCAD 2010. This amounts to gross negligence on AutoCAD's part - it really isn't that hard to rewrite a routine like this - unless their codebase is the spaghetti nightmare that I suspect it is.

After the files are missing, the temporary files will appear in the missing folder.
Temporary file names will be something like" atmp9454" , or "savE5F5.tmp"
Just choose one of the files above, and change the file extention to ".dwg" (i.e.: atmp9454.dwg)
Then you will recover your missing file.
It worked for me, I hope it will work for you too!

I also am working with AuotCAD 2012 and getting a HUGE amount of ATMP files. Today I came in and my .DWG was totally missing and I had to look at the timestamp of the ATMP to determine which was my latest.
AUTODESK THIS HAS BEEN A BUG FOR YEARS!!!! FIX YOUR CODE ASAP!
Your moto shouldn't be "IF IT'S BROKE, DON'T FIX IT." leave that one to Microsoft.
