Multiple load of same drawing in R14 running on Win 7 with Virtual XP

I recently bought a new computer with Windows 7, and I am running Autocad 14 in the Virtual XP mode. For the most part, it is working well with a few minor display quirks.
My problem is that autocad will allow me to open multiple instances of the same drawing on my station. Not a huge deal, but puts me at risk of working on 2 instances of the same drawing and accidently overwriting completed work.
The dwl files are being created and are recognized by others on our server when I have a file open. Also, when I try to open a file that someone else has open on the server, I get an alert that the file is in use, so I know that my machine is checking for the dwl files in the drawing directory. It is only on my machine that autocad will open multiple instances of the same file without any alerts.
Obviously this is manageable by checking to make sure that I don't already have the file open before I open another instance, but I would like to eliminate the possibility of accidently overwriting something.
Any suggestions on how to force my computer to only open one instance of a dwg file would be appreciated.
