I have some DWG's that are quit large. I have purged them, I have Changed the resolution to half to the size when making them into pdf's but they are still very big. Is there a way to turn off the 3D layer from the whole drawing to make it into 2D only.

AutoCAD is a 3d program, nothing to 'turn off'.
This freebie helps you get the file as small as you can get it:

The techniques that formerly were used to keep 2D drawing file sizes small (inserted blocks and xrefs) work equally as well for 3D drawings. You just have to do a little more work is all.

Are you talking about BIG DWG files or PDF files?

Life will be much easier if we just have a printout of
all the commands that exist in Autocad kept handy.

You could (though i don't recommend it) _FLATTEN your whole drawing... it WILL make it 2d BUT it will take a year and a day and may crash your computer
