    Try .DLLs in this path:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Thumbnail\

No. I'm talking about the ability of windows to 'read' and display the
    DWGThumbnail, while in thumbnail mode.

Unless I'm mistaken, this ability was installed along with AutoCAD,
because XP machines without AutoCAD cannot view DWG previews.

I'm looking for the .DLL and/or registry entries that make this happen.

When you have 100+ .DWG files in a directory, scrolling through said
directory is painfully slow (in Details View). Directories full of other
file types do not experiance this behavior. It seems like Windows is
trying to read each thumbnail in case I switch to ThumbNail view (Which
I never do) -- that is what I'm trying to disable.

    Thanks.

We use a little freeware utility called Drawing Quickview. This adds an item to the right click menu inside explorer when you click a drawing file.

In the about box it says "Freely Distributed" so I believe it is freeware & have attached the installation file.

Thanks, I think I've seen that one.

What I'd really like to know is whether or not Windows Explorer can display thumbnails of drawings. Heidi Hewitt in a tip said so, messages here say so, but it doesn't work for me.

I believe that from 2004 with WinXP, thumbnails were displayed in
Windows Explorer PROVIDED the drawing was saved with the setting to save
a bitmapped preview image. That is all that is shown in Windows
Explorer. Windoes Explorer does not look at the actual drawn elements to
    work out what to display.

As per two messages up, "Save a thumbnail image" is checked in Options.

I'm also unable to see a thumbnail preview in windows explorer. I have been trying to figure it out for ages. I have folders with hundreds of drawings that I sometimes need to go through and I now have to open them individually to see what they are.

Yes I have checked the box under Tools-->Options-->Open and Save-->Thumbnail Preview Settings.

I'm using AutoCad 2007 & 2009 and neither filetype is displaying the preview in Windows Explorer. I'm running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, with SP2

My machine is a 2.12 GHz with 4 gigs of ram. (not that that has any effect on this problem I'm sure)

Anybody have any suggestions? Almost everybody else in my office can see the previews and our "Computer Guy" can't seem to figure it out,

    CadXplorer?

Maybe you can take a look at "CadXplorer" from www.cadwerx.net - it has many functions, but the program is rather old, not updated for years and maybe it has problems with your X64 and the new versions. Maybe it can help ...(??)

Yeah I'm sure I could download some external software to preview the drawings, but I can't seem to figure out why some computers running the same software can see the thumbnails, and some can't.

I just fixed the non-showing of thumbnails in explorer by doing a repair install - fix the registry only on acad mech 2006. No disk was needed!
