I've been trying to import a Photoshop drawing into AutoCAD with no luck. I have tried to import the drawing as an EPS file but have found that AutoCAD doesn't recognize the file. I am able to import it as a TIFF or JPG file but those extensions import the drawing in pixels and not as vector based images which is what I need. Any suggestions? Does AutoCAD only give the option of exporting EPS files and not importing? Is there any other way to import a Photoshop drawing as a vector based drawing?

Insert your file as an OLE object, and make sure you check the
box Use OLE Application in the Plotting tab in Options window.

PhotoShop is a *raster*editing program. The only
output is raster data (pixels), not vector data. When you save your PhotoShop
image as EPS, you'll get an EPS with rasterdata. Importing in AutoCAD as Tiff,
Jpeg, Bmp, etc. is the only option (or use a vectorizing program to vectorize
the output from PhotoShop; but this is not a simple task and the results may be
disappointing).

Maybe it's just me, but I always thought that
Photoshop doesn't support vector information of any kind. When opening
an EPS file in Photoshop, you have to specify a resolution to rasterize it
to, and then it tries to make you save it as a PSD as the default option. .
.to save as EPS you have to save a copy, which flattens it, which would
eliminate the possiblity or being able to read any vectors out of
it.

Maybe from Illustrator, which uses a different form
of EPS, but I don't understand how you could possibly get vector
information out of photoshop in the first place.

Is there something I'm understanding wrong,

Anyway, to convert EPS to use in a DWG, I'd use
either Illustrator or Streamline, both of which have DXF capability, and both of
which support vector data.

I'm sorry I totally messed up....I meant to ask about Illustrator....I was using both. So I was asking about converting an EPS file to use in AutoCAD from Illustrator. I tried to convert to a DXF file in Illustrator but wasn't given the option. Any more suggestions?

I have more experience with working in the other direction (AutoCAD ->
Illustrator), so I am not 100% sure about this, but you could try to export
as WMF and import that in AutoCAD. Another option you could try is the
(free) GSView/GhostScript combination. This can read PostScript and convert
to DXF (it's under te Edit menu of GSView, "convert to vector"). BTW, I have
heard that Illustrator 9 supports the AutoCAD fileformat, but if you don't
have 9, that does not help you.

What your trying to do is raster to vector conversion, it is not built into AutoCAD software, nor is it in Photoshop or Illustrator.  The only programs that will actually change the file is the above mentioned...a converter, it is a separate software.  Like Adobe Streamline...and it is not very good, and it only does simple linework.  Other stronger programs such as Hitachi Raster Graphics or AutoCAD raster design OCR, it converts graphic files or especially direct scans.  although, your precept is an expensive one. Almost nothing comes out perfect, there is a bit of cleaning up afterwards. You also need vast hard drive space to convert large files.  The best approach is to import the file in the background "image" command or type "im", attach the file, test the scale...adjust if necessary, and trace over the file in AutoCAD.  Newer packages of AutoCAD have this R to V function built into its program.  If you are a old school cad user there is such a thing as a digitizer, you can copy large drawings quite accurately, but it is tedious.  welcome to the club i've been doing this for 30 years from architecture to civil design there are at least 10 ways to address this issue, but none can beat experience in drawing CAD accurately.

Note: raster is pixtels...little squares, vectors are a geometry formula, AutoCAD is actually a graphics database it uses both, but the drawing is all vector construction using short macros the program manages entities as a database.  Enjoy
