why is this files so large??????

Hi,
I have a site plan that I recieved the other day, as an update to a previous plan. The original file size was 326k, the new one is 7,253. I even tried exploding and purging it.
The really odd thing is when I purged it the new file size was not only larger but it was exactly the size of the original plus the new before purging. I will post a zip file with all three files in the customer files.
TIA
Rick

Two ways to make DWG files smaller:

1. -PURGE command, not just PURGE command, seems to get rid of even more
hidden entities. AUDIT along with it fixes issues as well.
2. WBLOCK only visible content in MODELSPACE to create a new smaller file.

Thanks for the reply Dean,
I did wblock it out and after reading your advise I did an audit and a -purge (it found nothing un referenced), it didn't help.

I opened the big drawing file and the smaller file,
did an erase all in both files.  The big drawing reports 147,000 objects
found, the small drawing reports 2300 object found.

EXPLODE will seldom if ever make a drawing smaller. It just means that any
repeated blocks, along with any hatch patterns will take several times more
file space than before.

Was the file larger than the "original" when it was sent to you, or after
you did some work on it?

144,000 tiny segments make up those contours on
layer TOPOLINESNEW (or something like that). Maybe they were splines converted
to polylines and then exploded. If you can do without them just erase them and
the file reduces to 220k. If you need them perhaps convert them to polylines,
that would proabably make the file size smaller.

Is it possible that the second drawing file that you received was scanned? Highlight some of the objects, do they appear to be broken-down into smaller objects when a single entity would normally suffice? -Jeff

Thanks for all the replies, I'll try to address them all. Both files are just as sent except the color, I only exploded it as an experiment to try to purge out blocks or extra entities. I'll compare the contour lines later.
Thanks again,
Rick

I have seen this one before. Someone sent me a really huge file, and I did all of the purges and stuff, then I started deleting some of theose entities, and found that there were a hundred copies on top of one another.

Just a thought
Roy
