runtime error when opening dwg

I've searched for runtime errors, and I've looked at many responses, but I
can't find one that addresses my specific problem. Suddenly after having
autocad on my computer for almost a year (windows xp pro), I'm getting tons
of crashes daily with a runtime error, This program has requested the
runtime to terminate in an unusual way. It only happens when I open a
drawing using the open command. I can open the same drawing just fine by
opening windows explorer and double clicking the file there. Everyone else
can open the drawing, and the problem pops up and resolves seemingly
randomly, though when a dwg decides to do it, it will do it every time til I
open it through the explorer route. I probably installed something minor
that has caused this, but too much goes on to pinpoint what it was. Nothing
major on the computer has changed. What can I do?!?!

use WinXP's restore feature to go back in time....

Backup first.

It seems like that would be a bigger productivity speedbump than dealing
with the crashes....

I understand: if you got the time to track it down, identify, record,
confirm with others, them remove and test and possible remove some more, go
for it.
