If you have Express Tools you can use BCOUNT. Otherwise you might find
something at a shareware site or you can consider a collection like
ToolPac 6.0 from http://www.dotsoft.com.

Gabis,

Terry mentioned BCOUNT (be aware that it doesn't count any nested
blocks) and his own tools.

Try using the PROPERTIES (MO) dialog box (or just the QSELECT
portion).

Apply To: Entire Drawing
Object Type: Block Reference
Properties: Name
Operator: * Wildcard Match <---- very useful
Value: *

How to Apply: Include in new selection

Check: Append to the current selection set

Click OK (if you used QSELECT the item will be highlighted and the
command prompt will tell how many were selected...
if you use the Modify Properties then there will be a Block Reference
(#) the # will be how many block references you have.

This doesn't count nested blocks... but you can see that this is a good
way to include/exclude/create new or append to a selection set.

You can start Filter, adjust object properly and select all in your dwg.
You will get two counts, #1 for all selected, #2 for filtered out.
The subtraction is your baby,

If the blocks are created properly and inserted on the correct layer,
isolate the layer, invoke a command like erase or move and select them all,
it will tell you how many are selected.
