Slow Select

I've got a drawing that has multiple xrefs in it. None of them are too large (1.2M is biggest). In my office (PIII600, 256, winNT), when I select an object to move (or any other editing), it takes a while (in terms of today's standards) to highlight the object, and continue in the command. I take the same file home (PIII450,256,win98), and it acts sluggishly the same for about 10-15 minutes, and then the selects occur fast as normal. Any ideas why this happens?

Sidebar: I'm reminded of the time I tried to install and run R12 on a 286. Isn't it funny that "slow" is constantly being re-evaluated, and now every fraction of a second counts.

I suppose I should have mentioned that at the office, some of the xrefs are located on a server.

I have had  a similar problem before. 
Make sure that you do not have any True Type fonts used in your drawing. For
some reason Autocad does not like to use True Type fonts.

True Type fonts (especially in the Xref) can cause this problem.
I have found that the more you zoom in for the selection the longer it
takes to select.
