Problem with Autosave

Whenever I save my drawing for some reason my autosave file gets deleted out of my Windows/Temp dir. Does anyone know why this happpens and how I can stop it? I like having my Autosaves in case I need to go back to something.

Thanks

From what I can tell,...this is what AutoCAD does
now.  I really don't care for this at all.

I think the logic is:  "If you saved the
file,..there is no need for an autosave anymore"  I do not believe in this
however,..if you crash and your drawing gets corrupted, and you are unable to be
open the file,.you have NOTHING to fall back on (since all your autosaves were
deleted). Sometimes .bak files will save you but not all the time.  I lost
an entire drawing that way once,..I had to redraw the whole
thing.

The only somewhat fix that I know is to do the following:

1. Set your autosave to 1 minute. (on slow computers this could be very
time consuming)

2. Go to "TOOLS", "OPTIONS", then click the "OPEN & SAVE" tab,...Look
under FILE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS" make sure that "CREATE BACKUP COPY WITH EACH
SAVE" is checked.

What this does:

It sets it so AutoCAD will autosave after one minute,...then,...after
one more minute it will autosave again,..the first autosave file will be set to
a bak file. So in actuality you will have a backup from 2 minutes ago.  As
long as you do not save manually within those two minutes,...you will get a bak
file of your first autosave.  Hope that wasn't too confusing.

Just be careful of the amount of bak files you accumulate,...you have to
delete them manually from time to time as they do take up hard drive
space to do this.  You may want to set your "TEMPORARY DRAWING FILE
LOCATION" & "AUTOSAVE FILE LOCATION" to its own directory on your c:
drive,....to keep a good eye on these files. I made a directory called
"C:\ACADTEMP\"

If there is a way to fix this autosave delete
problem,...PLEASE,.... let me know.

Hope all this helps!  If there is a way to
have autocad not delete autosave files, that would be a much better route to
take,...otherwise this is all I know you could do.  I will keep an eye
on this newsgroup post to see if any more options develop.

It helps if ISAVEPERCENT is set to 0 (zero) when you use the SAVE o QSAVE
often and rely on BAK files to pick up the slack. Building QSAVE or even
SAVE into lisp routines and toolbar button macros is so easy, if you plan it
ahead of time.

Is there a way to change the path of the .bak files to that of somthing different than the drawing file path? I would like to redirect my .bak files to a different location than my .dwg files.

Thank you for the MOVEBAK command. However when AutoCAD does an autosave the .bak file gets an error and says:
--------------------------------------------------------
Command:
Automatic save to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\01292S01_1_1_9169.sv$ ...

Command:
Moving BAK file to 'c:\windows\temp\01292S01_1_1_9169.bak'.

Error moving BAK file. (0)
--------------------------------------------------------

What does this mean and can I get it to create a .bak of the autosave file?

Thank you in advance.

What is your ISAVEBAK set to? (set it to 1)
What is your ISAVEPERCENT set to? (set it to 0)
What is your SAVEFILEPATH set to? (set it to an existing
directory/folder like "C:\TEMP\" but other than where you commonly
work)
What is your SAVETIME set to? (mine is set to 15)

Set MOVEBAK to some folder other than where you're working (mine is
D:\Work\BAK_Files)
And don't work in C:\Windows\Temp... and don't MOVEBAK to this folder.

SV$ files aren't the same as a BAK file...
Don't reply on AUTOSAVE... QSAVE often and the BAK files will be moved.

Last thing you might want to do is check out the Knowledge Base:
