Paper Space/Clipping Plane problem

When I try to use clipping plane cammand there are two problems. One problem is that when your use the slice part of clipping plane, often what your slicing through does'nt show up, i.e. steel column shows up as little dots were edges of column would be, in other words, if you took a slice through an I-beam it only shows as 12 little dots in the pattern of the I-beam. The other problem is when you pick the clipping plane command you don't get the whole picture of your model, i.e. doing framing plans of a building, you may only get a few levels of your building showing in the clipping plane window, so how do you get the rest of the floors to show? I'm kinda new to this PS thing at least as far as using it for steel drawings, what am I missing?
