Microstation conversion

Hello all,

We have a user in our office who uses Microstation (not sure which version, but not a recent one)at home then converts the drawing back to AutoCAD for the office. We are having problems with drawings crashing, specifically on the project he is working on. Has anyone got any experience / opinions of this problem? He also claims some of the drawings that are crashing have not been converted for some time, would any problems be immediately obvious or could they lay dormant before surfacing?
Any comments would be appreciated as some supporting statements would help if we need to stop him doing it.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

Have you tried running AutoCAD Audit on all files that load
after conversion or Audit if they load?  This should highlight and/or
correct and problems in the files.

John,

We've tried audit & a couple of errors are;

AcDbBlockReference(20C5D1) BTR Id invalid create new

AcDbPolyline(209550)
Invalid layer Null $AUDIT-BAD-LAYER

AcDbLine(209705) Invalid layer Null $AUDIT-BAD-LAYER

AcDbText(2098A1) Invalid layer Null $AUDIT-BAD-LAYER

AcDbEllipse(209932) Invalid layer Wrong type $AUDIT-BAD-LAYER

all duplicated many, many times.

The drawing crashes at the end of audit. I've tried inserting into a new drawing, etc, but it don't work.

Steve,

The only other suggestions I have is for him to save from MS
to dxf rather than dwg. and for you to dxfin the drawing.  Is there an
equivalent command to Audit in MS that he could run before conversion in case
there is a unseen problem in the basic MS file.

"BAD-LAYER" errors are common with translations from older versions of MSTA. MSTA has claimed for quite a while that it can translate ACAD DWG files, but the translations have always left a little to be desired. Extreme care needs to be exercised during translation to insure the proper level-layer mapping.

(BTW - Is his a legal version, or are you opening the company to lawsuit?)

Why do you consider this tampering and destruction of your project files
acceptable?
Do you normally allow company project files to be tampered with to the point
of no recovery with all your projects? Do your clients know that?
At what point do you start taking ownership of these files?

Do you own your own licenses of AutoCAD?
Is the employee full time or contract?
How do you know the Microstation software is licensed? Why can't he upgrade
to a more compliant version?

Have you considered forbidding use of anything other than AutoCAD on your
DWG files?

If his 'home' work is that valuable to the company, why not install AutoCAD
on his home computer? Licensing allows this as long as both the office and
the home copy are not used at the same time.

Re-read my post: Did that 'read' aggressive? Sorry, frustration was the
sentiment if you want to attach a feeling to it.
I think you can control the problem better if you control the files first,
then the need for employees to work at home.
