Dwg Slow Load As An Xref In A 2000i Dwg File

We have a very strange problem and hopefully someone can suggest a
solution.

We have an AutoCAD 14 dwg file that was originally very slow to open as a
standalone dwg on certain machines. We tracked this problem down a missing
shape file, PA.shx, on these machines. The PA.shx file had some custom
linetypes that someone created and when it was substituted for, the dwg
load time slowed to a crawl. Adding PA.shx to these machines and everything
is now back up to speed. Now, they wanted to use this dwg file as an Xref.
It was still fine in AutoCAD 14, but if you tried to Xref the file in
2000i, it would take 30 minutes to load. Why the difference??

In trying to solve this problem, I tried to get rid of the PA.shx file and
the custom linetypes. This was not easy since the drafter used the
linetypes by entity rather than bylayer. In 2000i, I selected everything
and then changed all of the object linetype properties to bylayer. I could
then purge and the custom linetypes and the PA.shx file were removed. Once
they were gone, the dwg file as an Xref was just as fast in 2000i as it was
in 14.

Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.
