AutoCAD 2002 & WHIP!

Hi all,

I have heard rumors that AutoCAD 2002 is not compatible with the current
version of the WHIP! plugin. Is this accurate? If so, is Autodesk planning
to release a new version to use with AutoCAD 2002? I work for an electric
utility and I convert all of our maps to .dwf so the linemen can view them
with laptops out in the field. With the WHIP! plugin they can just use MS
Internet Explorer to view them without having to install Volo View Express
which uses a LOT more of the laptop's resources. Can anyone provide some
information on this issue?

TIA!

It would appear that what you are describing is true. It is documented by
AutoDesk at the following URL:

Note: You can still add via the Add a Plotter wizard the "DWF Classic" or
"DWF ePlot (Whip 3.1 version)" drivers to produce Whip compatible DWF files.
Volo is only required for the new DWF format which has been enhanced

"With the new high-resolution DWF format, you not only get higher visual
fidelity but also can plot DWF files with the same quality as native DWG.
And DWF now supports additional raster image formats and offers various
merge control refinements."

You might want to check the Inteternet and/or Volo newsgroups. From what
I've been told, the Whip viewer is no longer being developed which is a
shame. As you've found, Volo is a poor replacement at this time.

Shaan,

Thanks for the reply! If I'm understanding you correctly, you can still
use the existing WHIP! plugin if you install the "old" drivers to AutoCAD
2002. Is this correct? Also, is Autodesk going to release an updated WHIP!
plugin for use with AutoCAD 2002, or is it abandoned and we will be forced
to use the much more memory and CPU intensive Volo View Express?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the tip, Shaan. We have invested a lot of time in an on-line
catalog/library that makes extensive use of the Whip plug-in...I will try
the 'Classic' driver as you suggest.

Todd,

Yes you can produce the old Whip compatible files. There is no longer Whip
being developed and another Volo View and Volo View Express coming soon and
even a public beta underway on http://betaprograms.autodesk.com.

Shaan - or someone at Adesk - can you explain why Whip is not being
developed any longer?! It's a product we use and plan to use extensively!

Thanks -
Brent
