What is the difference between "attachment" and "overlay" when you are
inserting an xreference?

Thanks in advance!

If you open Acad Help, select the index tab and type the phrase
overlaying xrefs you will get a definition complete with pictures.

Re: Attachment vs. Overlay

Jason,

This is the difference:
An x-ref inserted with the "attach" option *will* show up in another
drawing where its host is inserted as an x-ref, and will create in the
destination drawing all its layers and will make the destination drawing
bigger.
An x-ref inserted with the "overlay" option *will not* show up in another
drawing where its host is inserted as an x-ref and of course will not
create any layers or any other information in the destination drawing.

Suggested use of "overlay":
Assume we have a drawing called "elevation_master" containing all the
elevations of a project. In this file, the designer will insert the
"floor_plans_master" as an X-ref with the "overlay" option, so that he can
see the floor plan, rotate it, x-clip it, etc, in other words, just for a
reference. Then, the "elevation_master" file is inserted as an x-ref in the
plotting sheets, like "A-4.0". "A-4.1", etc. In these sheets, what matters
is the actual contents of "elevation_master" and not the contents of
"floor_plans_master" anymore. As the floor plans were inserted as "overlay"
in the "elevation_master" they will not show up on the sheets, preventing
these sheets from becoming overloaded with unnecessary layers and
information.
