2002 > R14 and R14 Doesn't Like It

Hi, I am having a very annoying problem, and I'm hoping someone here can help me solve the problem: We are using AutoCAD 2002, and R14. AutoCAD 2002 is set to save as R14 by default. When an xref file, lets call it X1 is last saved (in R14 format) with 2002, the xref will not show up when opening file F1 that is using X1 as the xref file...no errors, and all layers are on, but no entities show up. On the other hand, if F1 is opened with 2002, everything is OK. I found a strange solution to this problem; If X1 at this point is opened with R14, and then saved (R14, of course) then everything works OK. What is going on? Is there a patch or fix for this problem? Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Sam

I had to give up setting AutoCAD 2002 to save to
R14. I work with AutoCAD 2002 set to save to 2000 then do a save-as to 14 when
the files are needed. I had your mentioned problem, problems with corrupted
files, and more.

Setting SAVE to R14 works most of the time, but almost never with Xrefs for
a simple reason: all your files and Xrefs need to be the same AutoCAD
version for problems to go away in either R14 or R2000/i/2. It is just
easier to use SAVEAS than to keep track of it all.

Could be a sinister plot to ensure R14 cut-off from R2000/i/2 😉
