making biped walk then fall off ledge/run into objects

Hi all im new to 3ds and cant seem to make my ridgid body interact with its enviroment. im trying to have it walk off a ledge and fall. Im using the auto step tool to create steps but my biped just keeps walking into thin air so to speak. I tried to have it fall over an object but it just passes through it even though i made the box a static ridgid body.

Im using these steps.

!) make plane

20 make biped on plane

3) turn it all into ridgid bodys biped into ragdoll

4)create steps for biped

5) spend all day untill 4 in the mourning trying to make biped fall

I've looked all over the web and found nothing about falling i think i need to make some sort of constrainght or something for my biped to recognize what is ground and what is not pleese help im super lost. I have tried creating gravity to no avail, moving biped way up high. ect. and rctmakeragdoll () is not working either. im currently using 3ds max 2014 edition my friend used to have an earlier version and i remember it wasent that hard in there physics engine but the new one seem a little more trickey.
