Skinning one attached character or skinning separate parts as one?

When skinning my character, should I attach all the various parts of my character as ONE object to skin or should I leave it as separate parts (e.g. body suite, armour pieces, head, etc.) and apply an instanced skin modifier to all of the separate objects? What are the advantages and disadvantages for each one?
