Animating: rigging and deformations

Hi all,

Just a quick question. I've got a character completed with an auto-rigger, can I use the deformation (e.g non-linear/lattice) in maya to create squash/stretch effects, or will it affect the controllers/joints? In other words is my animation limited to the controllers on my animation, and the blend shapes only.

Thanks,

I have a facial rig that uses a lattice deformer that doesn't affect the joints.

It only affects the polygon mesh, from what I read in the Maya Manual.

So... I am going to assume that it would work elsewhere.

BUT...

I would assume that you would need to be careful of displacing verts too far, or your binding could get all weird when you re-pose near the deformer.

Edit:

P.S. I am looking into using something like this for the palm of a hand, so that the palm near the fingers will puff out when they are bent close to the palm (like it does on a real hand). So I would guess that there are other places they can be used without much problem as well.
