How to make complex surface texture?

I'm trying to model something to have a surface texture like this or this

How would you go about making such a texture in Alias, especially one that followed a curved surface?

Hi,

It's hard and extensive, to go on how you could achieve that, on a message here.

Alias can sure do it. If you check the HELP, you will see it is documented, on some tuts and in general help.

Check how textures work, and how you can combine them to achieve the desired effect.

Good luck.

#1 : map a circular ramp on solid projection of ball type. tune it via repeats and scaling of the ball texture geometry.

Put the texture geometry in the center of one of  the calottes. Maybe youd have to instance copy all the

         calottes...dunno.

Map the texture to the color or maybe to transparency

#2 : Since the texture has to follow a free surface and the texture looks simple i would try it with a simple surface mapping. So the texture follows the u-v-structure of the surface. To make sure you get the basic strukture you want use a bitmap and repeat it as often as you want. If you want to achieve a 3D-effect use a special>bump or even displacement.

Regards
