How to displace an image on a flat plane??

I have followed the tutorials on this site even downloaded the example wire files and still couldn't figure out how to get a flat plane to display a displacment image. It works ok on tora type surfaces, and curved bottles but not flat planes. The reason being I want to make some embossed patterns onto flat parts of a model and turn them inot poly mesh.

This image is what I am trying to achive but cannot:displacement.jpg

this is from the crude tutorial on the autodesk site. When I set up a projection mapping displacement the images doesn't even show up, same with just a file dispacement map. It only starts to deform the surface when I pull some cv's. I want to replicate the image above on flat plane however there is no documentation I have found to explain how to do this. if anyone has an example .wire with diplacements like the ones above please share!!!

Hello,

open the Multilister and follow these steps shown in the image.

1. create a new shader

2. duble click st the shader

3. select the Map button next to color

4. change to Displacement at Texturable Values

5. choose the texture file type (if you have a texture use file and load your texture)

6. you see know the loaded texture

7. select your shader and assign it to your surface

8. start a direct render

You see now the displaced tecture in the render view. To adjust the displacement,  duble click at the texture and open the tab Intensity. If the displacement is too strong put in smaler value. If it is not strong enough put higher value in.

Please let me know if it works now and that this is solved.

Or let me know if you need more assistance

Kind regards

Thanks a lot i didn't realize i had to pick displacement in the color mapping section, also that the only way to see it is in a render or by making ti a mesh

cheers

Regarding the Displacement workflow, I think you missed something to see it directly in real time into Alias.

First you need to use the Hardware Shade to see the Displacement effet on your flat surface.

You said it does not work, no it works, you just need to take care about one setting in the Hardware Shade mode:

Put the "Quality" mode to > User defined

Put "Show triangles" > On

And play with the tolerance value and or Limilt edge length value...

You need to have enough triangles in your Harware shade to reach your displacement effet in real time.

Take care about your workstation capability when you are using plenty of triangles...

When you found the correct value, you can turn Off the "Show triangles" and play with All Displacement value in real time...
