Hi Guys,
Having trouble selecting polygons or any sub objects for that matter, in an editable poly model. All quads.
Thought is might be fixed by installing the three service packs but to no avail.
Tried merging into a new scene no effect.
Was never an issue in 2017.
Really wish I could go back to 2016 but Auto desk says no, because I tried 2017 when it first came out, and then I went off subscription. 😞
I am dead in the water, until I can select sub objects.
My system scale is as seen in these images.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Tom

Hello @dreamlandmodels,
I'd like to help here if possible. Are you unable to select *any* faces or subobjects? There is a selection bug that exists in 2017 which should be fixed in the next update but it doesn't sound like what is happening to you right here. If you want you can PM me a link to part of the model to investigate and I'll happily do so. Additionally you may try a different display mode in the case that it's a Nitrous problem. I don't think this is a scene scale issue. Please keep me posted.

Well, I have spent the morning and afternoon trying different scene files and the problem only seems to happen on large models with over a hundred multi sub object materials.
I use a method of detaching a model once it is a mess, as far as material name order is concerned and then use attach to the base material to get the order in line A through Z in the material names.
That might be the culprit but it was never an issue in 2016.
So, it might be a combination of both version change, and my messed up way of getting things in order.
Is there any way I can convince Auto desk to allow me to run 2016 now that I am off subscription? As a special case?
That would resolve all my woes. I would obviously not use 2017 if that were possible.
If not, then I hope the bug is fixed in the next update.
Thanks for your help Alfred.
Yes I did install the service pack 3.
My video drivers are up to date.
Would the fact that I run 4 = widescreen monitors have anything to do with it? They are driven by two NVidia Geforce GTX 660 cards with I think 960 cuda cores might be less, not sure.
Regards, Tom
Hello @dreamlandmodels,
I'm sure your method isn't messed up, just different. If you can walk me through the repro steps and maybe PM me a file to put in the tracker I'd happily log this as a bug if it's working incorrectly. I know a selection issue was recently worked on and will be released in a future update.
As far as going back to 2016... it's not really my area. The licensing department is separate from support. If we can't find a fix I can reach out in your behalf but that's all I can really do.

Hello @dreamlandmodels,
Thank you for the link. First, beautiful model... very nice work. The selection issue I was referring to in an earlier post happens for example if I try to select the top roof polygon by single clicking on it. Sweep selecting it does work. I am able to select all the other polygons in general by any method, as well as all of the edges. For this reason I wonder if a plugin or config issue is causing you some headaches somehow. (Or a macroscript, etc.)
There are four main things we should try. The first is to reset your user settings. It may be that your settings have been corrupted somehow. (Don't delete the old ones, just rename ENU folder.) If that does nothing to fix the issue, you can close Max and rename the old one back to get all your settings back.
The second thing we can try is to disable plugins temporarily and see if the problem resolves. You can try to temporarily disable any plugins by going to Customize->Preferences->General and unchecking load plugins, however complicated plugins may ignore this setting on occasion. If you installed a new plugin or macroscript recently, maybe remove it temporarily and try again.
Third, maybe you are selecting those subobjects but for some reason the screen isn't updating. Almost like a driver issue. I wonder if doing a clean reinstall of your graphics drivers might be worth trying. Just for the sake of being thorough, let's also try a different display driver.
Lastly, it may be that your C++ or .Net libraries are somehow corrupted and the functionality is being affected. Since you are on W7, this link and this link may be helpful to repair them if there is a problem. Please try these things and update in the thread, I really appreciate it.

Hi Alfred,
I did all you suggested with no good results.
Even uninstalled the application deleted the folders left behind then did a fresh install.
Still no good.
I am dead in the water until I get this resolved.
Will try calling customer support tomorrow and beg them to allow me to revert to 2016,
but I am not holding my breath, as Auto Desk is pretty cold.
Not you bud, you have been a big help so far, and I have seen you trying very hard to help a lot of people in here.
Keep it up please. 🙂

Hello @dreamlandmodels,
Thanks for the link. I do want to stress that if it is policy not to roll these back then that will likely be enforced, but since I cannot resolve this issue it's the least I can do to send an email. Note that this bug will be fixed in a future update.
