Yellow Scale Triangle is missing when i click on scale

Yellow Scale Triangle is missing when i click on scale in 3DS Max 2014. i saw it earlier on the screen, but now it is gone. all the scale tool does is move the object up or down. (no matter what axis i move it.)

did i press something or this is a glitch in the program?

Views (menu) > Show Transform Gizmo. Is that on (ticked)?
Which Scale type is currently selected? Uniform, non-uniform or squash? Try setting it to non-uniform, enable the Axis Constraints toolbar then you can select which axis (or pair of axes) to scale, even with an "invisible" gizmo.

Max 2016 (SP1/EXT1)
Win7Pro x64 (SP1). i5-3570K @ 4.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX11.
nVidia GTX760 (2GB) (Driver 430.86).
