Sub-Object Selection is disappearing

I think I may have issues with my video card drivers. Ive lost the ability to zoom with the mouse wheel, it just freezes the viewport, (but I can zoom with the magnifying glass). Also sub-object selections are disappearing! See the image of a simple object in Edge Selection mode.
