Hi,
does anyone know how to delete layers in 3ds Max 2015? If i select them, rick click, and select delete from scene, nothing happens. Help page about new Layer Explorer is referring to some quad menu, but i am getting just regular windows context menu, no quad... 😕

Well that's different... No such issues here. Tried clearing your preferences and letting Max create a clean set?
I've spent a lot of time customizing Max 2015, actually several times in a row now, due to things like this. But this time, i would first like to know if there is some non-destructive way to solve it, before i wipe my config again 🙂
The Delete function in the quad only works on scene nodes.
To delete a layer, you can drag it "outside" the layer window area (to the menu section/border of the scene explorer). It took me a while to figure that out too. There should be a Delete Layer Button (as well as the old Add Selection to Layer button) like in old layer manager 😕
[EDIT] Well... this doesn't work after Extension 1. So it looks like we cannot delete layers anymore! It looks like an accountant made this decision--always leave a layer trail. 😛 Bug report time.
why AD do not keep delete button on the layer manager window ?
why when I nest a layer with objects in it, the objects don't stay in the nested layer ?
If you nest more than one layer at the same time, it is a mess !!!!
All features added in this layer manager have been tested ? really ? by whom ?
Give me his salary !!!!! I'll do it !!!
More than 700 euros for 2015.... I stop here or I will be "unpleasant"
@Steve That's it... the Current Default Layer was always the layer I kept testing. My brain is still wired for the default layer having a checkbox. So the Delete function DOES work on layers... just not on layers that are Blue 🙂
And how do you send PMs to users in new forum. I was trying to contact you directly Steve and cannot figure it out anymore.
Okay, so just resetting quad section of the user interface preferences did the job. I had to just recreate custom quads from scratch. I was surprised that hitting reset button on quads page did reset just quads, because from what i remember, it was always unpredictable, and most of the time i got reset also my toolbars, hotkeys and color scheme 😄
So again, after resetting quads to defaults, and restarting Max, i now get quad menu instead of context menu, and i can finally get rid of layers. Yay 🙂
Hi everyone,
Just got update from another user that resetting 3ds Max resolved this for him.
So maybe give this a try:

I found the same problem and fixed it by selecting all in scene and creating new layer with it, I could then delete the old layers.
I know it's not really a solution if you're happy with a large scene and lots of layers organised how you want them.
Had the same problem here, solved it with these scripts:

seem to work quite well and do the job
Hope it helps,
Tudor
It seems it was mainly getting used to the new layer manager... if the layer is active you can't delete it. Just make another one active by clicking on the little paper stack then right click the name of the layer to delete and click delete, job done. I prefer the old delete button myself but hey thats me, I also would like to not be able to create geometry on a hidden layer or in fact a group head in a hidden layer, after all why would I want to?
Make sure the layer you are right clicking and deleting is not the current layer - aside from this, the new layer system is horrible - wasn't broken and they messed around with it.

This is IMHO generally a bad idea...
Yes, sorry. I haven't been here for a long time. So i resolved it by resetting quad menu settings. You don't have to completely reset Max, just reset quads.
Turns out the problem is that if you migrate your settings from previous Max install, mainly UI settings, then new Max will import file with old Quad Men description. The old Quad Menu description will miss the new Layer Manager quad menu, and on right click, will display regular context menu instead, not quad. And this old context menu does not have delete option in it.
Which is why migrating settings from a previous release is decidedly not recommended, and also why there's an outstanding Uservoice request for the ability to import them.
