I use mental ray distributed bucket rendering with Max Design, and it works fine with Max Design 2014.
However, I'm unable to get it to work with 2015, SP-1. I get the message "target machine actively refused" (the connection). I found a thread in Autodesk support about changing the mi-ray value in the "services" file to 7003, but that didn't solve it.
Backburner network rendering still works fine.
Is anyone else having this problem?

I to am having this issue. I am not using the Design version but am having the exact same message. If I go back to 2012 it works just fine. Please help DBR is essencial to our workflow.
DBR works for me fine in 2015. I have max not max design, but this should be inrelevant here.
Often, the firewall is the problem. On one machine the installer doesn't create the default firewall rules. I have create them by hand.
This might not be related, but in 2015 the "mi-raysat_3dsmax2015_64" service is no longer started automatically. You must start it manually (or set it to Automatic) in order for DBR to work.
That sounds promising, but I'm not not sure how to do what you suggest. Would you mind describing how you start it manually, or set it to automatic?
Thanks,
David
There's probably a quicker way, but here's how I did it:
Open up the Widows Task Manager, click on the Services tab at the top, then click the Services... button at the bottom right. Scroll down until you find "mental ray Satellite for Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2015 64-bit". Right click and choose Properties. Chage the Startup type from Manual to Automatic. Hit Ok. Now it will always start on boot (like it used to). But you also have to start it for this session, so right click again and choose "Start".
or open a cmd.exe as admin and use this:
# manually start:
net start mi-raysat_3dsmax2015_64
# set to autostart:
sc config mi-raysat_3dsmax2015_64 start= auto
or put these lines in a .cmd file and start it as admin.
That worked for me. Thank you very much!
Next you'll be telling me that was in the documentation, huh? 🙂
Nope. The only indication that this behavior was changed is in the 2015 readme.

Oh hey, it just showed up on the MaxStation blog too.

IMHO it's a bad idea to change the default start setting. Maybe they should add a checkbox in the setup for this.
look all this is fun and games and buttons and UI and eye candy and workflow, I get it, it's annoying - i really do -_-
BUT just get them to fix the instability first, I straight up hate it they're playing around with whats auto, whats manual, but disregard the whole fact that it's so buggy and just keep disregarding it version after version after version.
I see my colleague at work using DBR with Corona and it's just... the way it should be or nearly perfect... And mine is just crap... and i keep using it out of necessity 😞
