Can 3DS 2012 import Inventor 2013 files?

I have 3DS Max Design 2012 and the Inventor Server fails during the import of my Inventor 2013 files.  I've tried a number of different Inventor models and all die during import.

Do i need a later version of 3DS Max Design or should 2012 be sufficient in theory??

thanks in anticipation.

dan

Error message is:

"Inventor Import Error

The Inventor file could not be opened for import.  Try opening the file in Inventor to see what is wrong.  The last version of Inventor.exe that was opened is what is used for the importer.  Make sure you are using the corret versio, or a newer one."

"Improper file format".

Do you have Inventor 2013?

Seems that is needed to import...

If you can Zip the pack n go I can convert it...FYI

Hi - thanks for the offer.
Yes i have Inventor 2013 on the same machine. Do you have a newer version of 3DS or why would you succeed where i've failed? - I can't really rely on sending you my models for the next year or so. Appreciate the offer tho.

Yes I do...

Try do it with Inventor 2013 open and blank.

The other option is to save it as an FBX file.

If you have the suite you can "send" it to Max...that is my best option for opening Inventor files in Max.

In a nutshell, you do need 3ds Max 2013 to open Inventor 2013 files directly as the Inventer Server engine in 2012 is not capable of reading the 2013 files properly.  You can save the Inventor 2013 files as STEP and then open those direclty in 2012 as a work around though you will lose any material information that you have placed in Inventor.  Which may not be a bad thing.
