3ds Max 2012 Perpective viewport is black!?

Hello-

Since the install, 3ds Max 2012 has been acting strangely and will not display the perspective viewport correctly. It shows up as pitch black. However, when I nudge it via a "pan" or "rotate" mouse movement it momentarily displays correctly, then reverts to black.

I have installed SP1, Hotfix 1, Hotfix 2, and a new driver for my video card (Nvidia Quadro 4000).

At this point I am out of ideas. Please help!

Image is attached.

Working through this a bit more...

I am using the sample file from the Youtube link: Using Substance Maps-Part 2, and in my attachment, you can see how it is appearing.

Hopefully this can help in diagnosing the issue?

Try this:
Go to "Rendering/Environment". Check/Change the Background Color.
In the active viewport menu, open "Configure...", go to the "Visual Style and Appearance" tab and check "Use Environment Background Color". Click "Apply to Active View" and "OK".

Hope this helps.

Hi Werner-

Tried this...no change. This is not happening at render time, but rather, directly in the viewport...I' am at a loss...

I've seen a similar thing on occassion if I happen to open certain other apps. In my instances, it has occured when I simultaneously opened Valve's Hammer Editor with Max open and/or launched a game (like Counter-Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2, etc). It seems like there are too many things wanting to control the graphics card...?

Anyway... I realize it may not be exactly your issue... but maybe similar enough to give you an idea.

Try a different viewport driver (OpenGL / DirectX / Nitrous) and see if the problem affects all of them.
Message 8 of 13

Switched to DirectX, things seems to work normally there. This is a fix, though not a good one, since the Nitrous viewport is one the nice new features of 2012.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help!

What driver are you using? (works for me with 275.65)

You are not required to use the viewcube to disable progressive refinement:
juste disable/click on the hollow cube icon below the timeline, left to the "Add Time Tag" button, it toggles progressive refinement.
Be aware that this a per viewport setting and that after loading a scene, the icon does'nt always update. So it might still look disabled while progressive refinement is actually actvate: so click on it just to make sure that it's off...

BTW: With the Direct3D display driver active, the same icon is responsible for the adaptive degradation feature to enhance display performance. So don't get confused by this "great" UI design...
