CAT rigs

3ds Max CAT rigging / Video tuts 🙂
Hope these help. They are a bit older (2009 and older)

All videos are in this zip file;

Centaur (zip) ; http://jp.joshpurple.com/CentaurRun.zip
In zip file; Centaur.rg3, CentaurRun.cmp, 3ds Max 2009 32bit Centaur.Max

A new rig. Created by copying and pasting parts together from other rigs (CAT makes this very fast and easy to do).
The thumb could use a little adjusting.

I'll post-up some other CentaurRun examples. I've received some great feedback on this centaur running motion, -as people have pointed out that a centaur might run in a number of different ways. If you are a centaur, or know someone who is, please feel free to post-up a video example 😄 .
Feedback on anything I've posted-up is always welcomed. Glad to help with any questions on it.

This is a variation on the centaur running motion (zip) ; http://jp.joshpurple.com/CentaurRunLiftUp_cmp.zip
In zip, 'CentaurRunLiftUp.cmp.'

The change in the motion is a lifting-up of the ribcage, with the arms offset but attempting to match the galloping timing / action of the horse run.

Thanks for all these Josh, you really are helping out a lot of people.
When doing the Joe Gunn Rotations Tutorial, did you encounter the problem of the rotation reversing itself half way along the path?
If so have you figured out a solution?
I noticed that it also happens in the tutorial movie, you can just catch a glimpse of it when he reverses the direction of rotation at the end of the path.
Thanks again for all your input on this board.

Glad to help, and Thank You Alan 🙂 . Pardon any delay in getting back to you.

To avoid that rotation issue, my first guess is you might not be using Generic Units in Max? If so, your wiring set-up "Expression for Z_Rotation" might not be dividing the 'Local_Position_X' with an accurate value ( -the cylinder's Radius value). But, it could be due to a number of different reasons, and depending on what you need your wheel to do, it could be solved using simple to fairly complex methods.

Check this 3ds Max 2009 32bit scene file; http://jp.joshpurple.com/WheelRotations.zip (zip file).
Play the animation and watch the wheel action. Then open up the Parameter Wiring Dia. box. You should see the "Expression for Z_Rotation" as; Local_Position_X / 14 . Change that expression to (for example); Local_Position_X / 3 , and Update the expression. Play the animation and note how the wheel action now looks like it has that rotation issue.

Another simple solution could be using completely straight splines. The bezier / smooth curves can affect the wheel's rotation (but if you are dividing by the wheel's radius, then it will help to reduce the rotation issue). The second spline in the scene (added as 'Line02' in Point01's Path Constraint) is an example of how -even if the expression is being divided by the wheel's radius- a more complex spline / path will create issues for the wheel's rotation (you might try adjusting that second spline into a 'C' curve, or other shapes, etc. to see how the change in the wheel's path affects the wheel's rotation).

To see some good explanations on more complex methods for solving wheel rotation issues check this link; http://blog.duber.cz/3ds-max/intermediate-wheel-rig (The link, "duber’s blog," also gives a link to Paul Neale’s web site, -where Paul goes over a car wheel's rotation. <-- Paul Neale's site is outstanding for a ton of additional resources. If you haven't seen his site before, be sure to check it out 🙂 ). Hope that helps / makes sense (and pardon if you already knew all of this 😄 ).

Edit: And Welcome to the AREA 🙂 !

Base Human and Base Human Walk (zip) ; http://jp.joshpurple.com/BaseHumanWalk.zip
In zip; BaseHumanWalk.cmp , BaseHuman-4-2-2009.rg3 , scale.jpg , 3ds Max 2009 32 bit 'BaseHumanWalk.max'

Another attempt at an update on a BaseHuman rig and CATMotion walk cycle for it. This BaseHuman CAT rig has fingers (named) and one toe digit, along with Gizmos, on it. After putting the BaseHumanWalk.cmp on the rig, you may want to adjust the thumb's position. Hopefully this rig will help as a time saver for set-ups. In the Max file the CAT Gizmos, base, and foot platforms are in a separate layer from the CAT bones. Glad to help with any questions on it.

Winged Humanoid (zip) : http://jp.joshpurple.com/WingedHumanoid.zip
In zip; WingedHumanoidFlying.clp , WingedHumanoid.rg3 , scale.jpg , 3ds Max 2009 32bit scene, "Winged Humanoid.max"

New rig, created by copying and pasting parts from other rigs. No CATMotion preset (yet), just a Clip (.clp) file for the animation. The flying animation is just a basic starting point. To get rid of the 'overly flapping / rotating' feathers (digits), double click on the CAT Palm and all of the digits will be selected (then you can deselect the Palm, select the key frames for the digits and delete them).

Notes / Tips; When I'm rendering these small gifs out, I turn-off; Render dia. > Renderer tab > Antialiasing > Filter Maps (just because the animations are so short, low quality, compressed, etc. & I'll forget about that setting 😄 ). Be sure to turn that setting back on if you want to use your Antialiasing Filter Maps. I've used the standard Max Layers to organize the rig parts and the gimzo's, etc.

If you use CATMotion with this rig, to get at the wing control -apart from the arms- (or for getting at any individual limb / multiple CAT parts, etc.), 'unlock' the lock icon next to the "Limbs" text under the motion curves, -you can select and adjust the individual limb values (see pic attached).

If you are using Abs Animation Layers and the Gizmo's, some nice CAT features (from the CAT Wiki) are;

Creating Custom Gizmo Hierarchies

It is not necessary to link Gizmo objects to any part of the CATRig, although if you wish, this is not a problem. Often it is more interesting to link the gizmos together.

You can create hierarchies of Gizmos that reflect your desired navigation of the rig, rather than the actual hierarchies of the CATRig. You can link the ribcage gizmo directly to the Pelvis Gizmo and then quickly navigate your rig using the PageUp and PageDown buttons.

Defying the laws of Circular Dependencies

You are able to Link Gizmos together in ways that would normally cause a circular dependency in Max. You can, for example, link the Gizmo for the FootPlatform directly to the Gizmo for the Ankle without causing a circular dependency.

Not to forget the Layer Transform Nodes; http://cat.wiki.softimage.com/index.php/Layer_Transform_Nodes

Hey xyzimagenes, Thanks for the heads-up. Sorry about the delay, I'm working on getting it running ASAP. When I get it working, I'll be sure to post-up a note.

My server, and all of my other domains, seem to be working with no issues. I haven't done anything to change any settings (and it's been running with no issues today, -until now). I'm wondering if maybe the bandwidth on my domain (joshpurple.com) has exceeded what my ISP (comcast) allows?

(Welcome to the AREA 🙂 ).

Thank You guys, -glad you like them 🙂 .

Great work Corwin! Thanks for sharing your animation.
As far as I know, the only way I've been able to attach pics / gifs on the AREA forum is by using the 'Attachments,' > 'Browse' option ( I'm not sure why the AREA is set-up like that for pics, -maybe for security issues? )

Hummingbird (zip) ; http://jp.joshpurple.com/hummingbird.zip
In zip; Hummingbird.rg3 , Hummingbird.cmp , 3ds Max 2009 32bit scene file, "Hummingbird.max."

New rig (created from 'None,' > 'Create Pelvis,' etc. ). A very basic rig, but the 'Hummingbird.cmp' might be useful as an example of CAT Motion zero'd out (except for the wing movement). A CAT Motion layer zero'd out can help for keeping the feet still (when needed for flying or swimming rigs, etc.). It can also help to see how adjusting the CAT Motion values + / - from zero create movement on the different CAT rig parts.

Note: If you are going to render using this Max scene file, be sure to check the Render tab settings > Object Motion Blur (the Blur values are set very high).

The rigs are phenomenal. Thanks for sharing. And I can only agree a shark rig would be cracking.
Would be glad if you make one 🙂

I'm sorry for my bad english.
