Scene Materials are Missing in Material/Map Browser

When I open any 3ds max scene I can't see maps and materials in Material/Map Browser. I still can load material libraries, but I can't find anywhere scene materials.
I've attached the screen-cap to show how it looks like.

Under what circumstances? It works fine here, but I'm using Max not Max Design.
If you're using the Slate Editor then the Browser should be visible inside the main Slate window.

Max 2016 (SP1/EXT1)
Win7Pro x64 (SP1). i5-3570K @ 4.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX11.
nVidia GTX760 (2GB) (Driver 430.86).

Hi..

Using MaxDesign 2014 / Win 8.0 / 64bit. / 16GB / Nvidia Graphics

-

The browser is visible allright..

But the groups for "Scene material" and "Sample slots" inside the browser are not there.

-

I have tried to re-initiate the interface.

Changing default renderers etc.

-

I can see the group, i f i use the compact mode, and tweaking the system to use the old "material browser".

i have same issue

im making right click and select "Show Incompatible" and then i see materials, but not Scene Materials.

For Scene Materials i changed SME.ini

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2014 - 64bit\ENU\plugcfg_ln\SME.ini

[Material Browser Section]
UseOldMtlBrowser=1

I'm using old material browser now and i have Scene Materials.

This sollution is only for Compact Material Editor

there is not sollution for Slate Material Editor

OK this seems to be a very stupid and annyoing BUG!

-

I found that MAX / MAXDesign is loading the materialbrowser layout from within the max setting in your user-profile.
C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMaxDesign...

But if you load a layoutfile (..additional options-> load layout->*.mpl) from outside the userprofile it came up ok with scenematerials, sampleslots etc.

I tried to copy a fresh layoutfile to my profile, no result.

I trid to delete the whole "3dsMaxDesign" folder within the userprofile, but same issue after it was rebuild by max...

-

This made me think that i have a userprofilepath that contains a specialcharacter because of my username - the danish letter "ø".

I made two ekstra test-users on the system. One containing "ø" and another with no special characters.

-

And there you go .. the user / userprofile with no special character has no problem with this issue..!

-

So there is some of the answer to this annoying BUG..

Wonder what else is not right because of this ...?

-

Still havent solved the other weird issue with the coordinates though..

Same problem here -

Easy solution here step by step

1) press m( for material editor)

2) open slate material editor instead compact( from compact mode option)

3)go to option in slate material editor

4) Check the option "Use compatiblility display mode" further down in the screen

VOILA ~~

You can again change the mode to compact view of material editor( you'll not get the blank page as showing)

Hi,

I have the same problem with max 2016, the Scene Materials group won't show in Materia/Map Browser (compact or slate)

I tried the different solutions found here but I can't find the .mpl file (map browser layout)

That's really annoying...

Hello @frdcha,

Does your Windows username have a special character in it?

Best Regards,

Hello,

There are two "é" in it , but if I change it, I'm afraid I'll lost all the links of the other softwares.

Hello @frdcha,

It's a tough situation.   I don't think you'd need to change you username, but maybe you can make another user as a test to see if this solves your problem.  I have made a link to this thread in the bug tracker to update with more information from this thread.

I think the problem exists because in the English language these characters don't exist.  Are you (or is anyone else) finding this problem happens on foreign language versions of Windows?   It would be good information to log.

Best Regards,

Hello,

It's a french version of Windows, and I have the same problem when I open 3dsmax in french version.

This "user path" with "special characters" works fine for in 3dsmax for export or other actions...

Do you know where are loacted the material/map brower layout files (.mpl)? I could try to load it and then save a copy in another location.

Thanks

Thanks for the information @frdcha,

You can find .mpl's in the following locations:  (Change 2017 to 2016 if on 2016, etc.)  You should be able to just copy and past this path into windows and press enter to go to the folder.  There are a few .mpl's in various locations.  I believe the top one is the one you want.

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2017 - 64bit\ENU\en-US\defaults\MAX

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\en-US\defaults  (Check subfolders)

Best Regards,

Hi,

I found the .mpl file but when I load it manually there's no scene materials group.

I found an old version of a customized .mpl file in my archives, loaded it and it worked, the scene materials group is there??

It doesn't explain why it doesn't work whith the default max2016 .mpl file but at least I can use it this way.

Thanks for the help.
