How to enable selecting another object ?

i'm not finding out how to enable 3ds to select another object. the select functions are grayed out. probably i'm in a function and don't see it.

How does this work ?

What tool do you have selected? Did you press 'spacebar' and lock the selection by mistake?

Has anyone else (in max 2015) noticed a problem with selection using the auto crossing options ? As far as i can see its broken (i.e. when i choose auto crossing based on left to right or right to left - "everything" gets selected when there is a crossing (it can no longer make the distinction).

I replied to the post immediately above mine, not to you (the thread question). If you look at the top of my post it says "in reply to leochester", so no it wasn't relevent to the thread, but neither was it accidental 😉
