How to apply materials to a spline

I'm new to 3dsmax. I'm a Civil3D user mostly but can see some advantage to using max for presentation.

That being said how can I apply a material like grass or asphalt to a closed spline area?

Thanks

Splines are 2D shapes and can't be rendered on their own. You can do many things with them to create a 3D shape that can be rendered however. If you are looking for a flat disc then just use a Cylinder with 0 height or you can apply an extrude modifier to your circle with 0 height. Once that is done you will have faces that can be rendered.

What if I wanted to simply to do something like this?

Apply an extrude modifier to 0.
