I am sure this has been asked before but I couldn't find any other posts.
Every time I switch my viewports to any of the orthographic views (Front, Left, Etc) my orbit viewport tool gets locked.
I can use the ViewCube, but not the alt+MMB.
What did I toggle on/off?
Which version Max do you have? I remember there being a hotkey orbit lock in earlier versions maybe, but it got dropped..?
Although threads like this make me wonder: http://forums.cgsociety.org/archive/index.php/t-361349.html

Yes, I saw a bunch of the same.
I’m sorry for omitting the version. I am using 3DS Max 2014.
I also errored in the Orbit key commands... it is Ctrl+LMB not "Alt_MMB".
Either way, the gist is this...
I switch to the Front View by using a custom hot Key "Shift+F" or top view by hitting "Shift+T" etc and when I do I can no longer Orbit. Once I use the gizmo in the upper right of the screen and orbit around the selected mesh, I'm good to go.
I should slo say that I am a LONG time 3DS Max user and this is the first time I have ever encountered such an issue.
These are the hotkeys I always use, and I’m not doing anything different.
HOWEVER, that said, Max has ONCE AGAIN bunked my hotkeys (a bug I have been on Autodesk about for years now) and this started after i reset all my hotkeys (by hand) again.
Yes, I am aware that there is a "Load .kbdx file" button.
I am also aware that this "feature" crashes max and scrubs all your preferences. (Another bug I have been on Autodesk about for years).
There is a new option in the mouse settings tab called "Lock orbit in orthographics views"
( Customize user Interface->Mouse ). Guess the purpose
Uncheck it and your problem should be gone ....
